Guardian Rumour Mill

Daniel Harris

It’s been a decade, so some is probably due, but the Mill is concerned that Manchester United are perpetrating what looks befuddlingly like competence. First, they identified, negotiated for and then bought Mason Mount, then they agreed a deal with Internazionale for André Onana – Fugees, Rihanna and Peggy Gou terrace anthems included – and now will turn their focus to Rasmus Højlund. Most disquietingly of all, these are players they need, not players that besuited chipmunks believe they can monetise; how they capitulate from here is sure to delight soccer-lovers everywhere.

United are also looking to divest themselves of numerous individuals. After the roaring success of their Jesse Lingard signing, Nottingham Forest are interested in Anthony Elanga, having presumably assumed his box-jumping prowess relates to the area 18 yards from goal, and will also, if the clubs can agree a fee, sign Dean Henderson. He is keen on the move but also expects that Real Madrid and Barcelona will soon decide a vaguely acceptable keeper with a baseball hat covalently bonded to his head is exactly what they need.

Otherwise, United have refused West Ham’s request to take Harry Maguire on loan. Though Erik ten Hag recently relieved the England meme of the captaincy – a move that saddened all those who enjoyed him trotting on at 90+4 minutes and taking the armband – he is unwilling to let him leave on anything but a permanent deal. West Ham, though, are strapped for cash after selling the midfielder-cum-lighthouse Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m, so have retreated.

However, they are trying to sign João Palhinha from Fulham but their bid of £45m was rejected. So instead they are looking at Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka, who has long lusted after the sophisticated style, pioneering tactics and inspirational charisma of David Moyes.

In other midfield news, Chelsea plan to submit an improved bid, upwards of £70m, for Brighton’s Moises Caicédo. They have already agreed personal terms with the player who is enthused by the clarity of Todd Boehly’s vision for club as well as the opportunity to simply be in his presence.

Across London, though Harry Kane is attracted by Paris’s high culture, he has decided that Paris Saint-Germain offer fruit too tediously low-hanging even for a man of his voracious appetites. He would, though, be open to moving to Bayern Munich – provided, of course, Goretzka does not inspire a mass exodus from Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala and the rest to near Westfield. Should Daniel Levy agree to the deal, Spurs may move for Brentford’s Ivan Toney, who will return from his ban in January just in time for Ange Postecoglou’s third job-endangering crisis.

Talking of West Ham, Michail Antonio could be the latest player to decide a weekly pay packet comprising tens of thousands of pounds is insufficient. He has held preliminary talks with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ettifaq and, though he’s been a PIF fan since childhood, will countenance playing instead for the Ministry of Sports and the privilege of learning from communicator extraordinaire, Steven Gerrard.

Elsewhere, Al-Nassr would like to sign Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen, as would Aston Villa – rarely has Birmingham looked so appealing – while, in what is surely a chinwag for the ages, Wolves are talking to Borussia Mönchengladbach about their Swiss defender Nico Elvedi.

Burnley, Leicester and Sheffield United, meanwhile, would like to loan Amad Diallo from Manchester United, while Burnley, Leicester and Brighton fancy taking Cole Palmer on loan from Manchester City – though, most likely, Southampton pip all three by stumping up a fee of £983m.

And finally Inter, flush with Onana cash, plan to bid £34.3m for the Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun; Arsenal, though, value the Reims legend at £50m.

Bayern Strikes

Leon Goretzka on West Ham’s shortlist to replace Declan Rice

Bayern Munich presented their first midfield signing to the media on Monday. Konrad Laimer spoke to the media after joining Die Roten from RB Leipzig on a free transfer. The Austrian midfielder was a long-term target for Bayern as they tried to sign him last summer by making three bids. However, RB Leipzig stood firm and decided to risk losing him on a free transfer.

The Bavarian club is looking to add another number six to the squad. However, they are currently focusing on completing a deal to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur to strengthen the attack. Another midfield reinforcement may come later in the summer transfer window.

Die Roten’s plan to add two new midfielders to the squad has led to speculation over the future of Leon Goretzka. The German midfielder lost his place in the starting XI under Thomas Tuchel at the end of the last season. Tuchel was reportedly not convinced with the midfield combination of Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich.

Leon Goretzka is determined to stay at Bayern next season, but he is subject to interest from Premier League. According to Sky Sports in Germany, West Ham United has Goretzka on the shortlist to strengthen midfield after the departure of Declan Rice.

Bayern is not actively looking to sell Goretzka, but an offer worth €40-50 million may change their mind. Leon Goretzka has no plans to leave Bavaria as of now. He is ready to fight for a place in the team after a difficult last campaign. Apart from West Ham, Manchester United has been linked with Goretzka in the past.

Goretzka currently has three years left on his contract. The German midfielder has been a mainstay in Die Roten’s starting XI since arriving from Schalke in 2018. He formed a strong midfield partnership with Kimmich. However, his form dipped last season, which has also led to concerns amongst Bayern chiefs about the German midfield axis.

The former Schalke midfielder may have to look for a move later in the window if Thomas Tuchel is not involved in plans for next season. Goretzka will look for a bigger move at this stage of his career than joining West Ham United.

Player to have ‘face-to-face’ talks West Ham over his future – Hammers standing firm

On June 30th, Tuttosport stated Nikola Vlašić has informed David Moyes and other West Ham United officials that he has no intention too returning to the club after spending last season on loan at Torino.

This is relayed again in today’s Tuttosport, who say Torino technical director Davide Vagnati has failed to convince the Hammers to let go of the 25-year-old.

It’s claimed the Serie A side have offered a maximum of €9m while West Ham want €13m to sanction the attacking midfielder’s sale. The two clubs, for now, are ‘very distant’.

The Croatia international returned to London yesterday and will start training with West Ham from today.

The report states Moyes’ side will make Vlašić available on the market and try to find a buyer ready to meet their demands. Torino, for now, have stopped chasing him. Tuttosport say the two clubs are playing ‘their own game’.

La Stampa, relayed by TuttoMercatoWeb, say Vlašić ‘wants to return’ to Torino, who have offered less than €10m. Meanwhile, West Ham are asking for €14m.

Vlašić is set to have ‘face-to-face’ talks with West Ham officials over his future. It’s said the ‘wait is over’ for him. Torino would be keen to know the outcome of this meeting.

La Stampa say a ‘turning point is urgently needed’ for Torino, because another club could sign the player in this window.

West Ham are sticking to their stance, and are absolutely right to do so.

Caught Offside

West Ham in talks to sign 23-year-old from rivals, hoping to pay £30 million

West Ham United are interested in signing the Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

A report from Football Insider claims that the Hammers have now opened talks with the Blues regarding the 23-year-old midfielder.

Apparently, the talented young central midfielder has a number of suitors and it will be interesting to see where he ends up.

West Ham are hoping to pay around £30 million for the English midfielder this summer. The Hammers are flush with cash after the departure of Declan Rice and they will look to strengthen their squad significantly.

They must look to bring in a quality defensive midfielder and a central midfielder this summer. Gallagher could prove to be a quality acquisition. The 23-year-old excelled during his loan spell at Crystal Palace and he could be a key player for West Ham in the coming seasons.

He is unlikely to get regular game time at Stamford Bridge and the move away from Chelsea would be ideal for him. The Blues are reportedly open to selling the player but they are looking to bring in replacements first.

Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo is reportedly a target for Chelsea. It is fair to assume that the Blues will sanction the departure of Gallagher once they have finalised a move for the 21-year-old Brighton midfielder.

West Ham will be competing in the UEFA Europa League next season and the opportunity to play regular first-team football with them will be an attractive option for the Chelsea midfielder.
